Frequently Asked Questions
(FAQs)
What will I learn?
(top)
The National Sustainable Building Advisor Program (NaSBAP)
is a comprehensive program that provides the theory and knowledge
required to understand how to build green from the ground up. Learn
what makes a project sustainable and get the resources to confidently
work as a Certified Sustainable Building Advisor (CSBA). Real world
insight and up-to-date technology is shared by guest instructors.
Experience working on a green team and site visits are part of the
curriculum. Research papers, many resources and two textbooks add
even more value to the program.

Do you need
to be in the building industry already? (top)
No, even home owners and life-long students benefit from
the program. While the material is sometimes on the technical side,
even those new to the industry can follow the curriculum. It's a
very interesting subject that goes beyond just one area of building,
so even those with expertise in building or design can benefit from
the knowledge and certification.
What is the difference
between LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design Green
Building Rating System™) and the NaSBAP?
(top)
LEED is the green building rating system developed by the US Green
Building Council (USGBC). According to one instructor, LEED explains
one set of rules of the game and NaSBAP shows you how to play the
game. Many SBA's are also LEED Accredited Professionals. Both certifications
are complementary to the other.
What if I miss a
class during the program? (top)
Students can miss one class and still complete the program. Classes
can be made up by attending other classes held in the Northwest
(as the other class schedule allows). If minimum attendance is not
met, the class will not be completed. Successful course completion
includes attendance for a minimum of eight (8) of the nine (9) in-class
units; completion of monthly written assignments; participation
in class; and presentation of the Team Project.
If I complete
the class will I be a Certified Sustainable Building Advisor (CSBA)?
(top)
No. You still have to take the CSBA Exam. Only graduates who have successfully completed the nine-month SBA course are eligible to take the CSBA exam. Local SBA course providers will provide a list of SBA graduates eligible to take the exam. NaSBAP verifies this list prior to accepting exam registration and payment information.
Does taking the
CSBA Exam cost money? (top)
The cost of taking the CSBA exam is included in the course tuition
(a $200 value!).
